FAQ: What are Subdomains, Parked Domains, and Add-on Domains?

Everyone knows what a domain is, but we’re often asked about these three things. The problem is certainly compounded by the lack of adequate translations into our language and related languages, which makes their interpretation more complicated.

So:

Subdomain:

  • Let’s say your domain is called mydomain.co.rs, and you have your website on it (which in that case is most likely located at http://mydomain.co.rs)
  • In addition to it, you want to have a blog, which you would (most likely) install in a subdirectory of the existing website, and which you would access at http://mydomain.co.rs/blog
  • But if you want the blog to be accessed at http://blog.mydomain.co.rs, you need to create a subdomain, “blog”, which will be a subdomain of the existing domain mydomain.co.rs
  • Creating a subdomain is essentially a “minor” server configuration, and most providers and hosting services (such as ours) do not charge for creating subdomains, nor do they limit the number of subdomains you can have.

Parked Domain:

  • Let’s say you have two registered domains, for example mydomain.co.rs and my-second-domain.co.rs
  • And let’s say you want http://my-second-domain.co.rs to “show” the identical website as http://mydomain.co.rs
  • In this case, you need to request this service from your hosting provider
  • Some hosting providers do not allow parked domains (ours is not among them), so pay attention when choosing hosting if you need this type of service.

And finally, Add-On Domain:

  • Let’s say you have two registered domains, for example mydomain.co.rs and my-second-domain.co.rs
  • And let’s say you want http://my-second-domain.co.rs to contain a completely independent website from the one displayed at http://mydomain.co.rs
  • In this case, your hosting service must provide add-on domain service
  • Also, some hosting providers do not allow add-on domains (ours is not among them), so pay attention when choosing hosting if you need this type of service
  • In this case, the space you can use on the server is added up, so you can have multiple websites using multiple add-on domains, but all of them together can occupy as much space on the server as your hosting service allows.
